180 degree rule

The 180 degree rule is paramount important to making the film flow with continuity. This rule is used during a conversation in a film. This rule ensures that the audience can follow the film clearly without getting confused one where each character stands either side of the line. The 180 degree rule establishes a line where the camera only stays on one side and this stops the break in the line. This helps the film flow and make sense. The series of shots normally used here include over the shoulder close ups and medium close ups of each character in the scene.

The rules for breaking the line

  • one example, whilst the camera is rolling the camera clearly establishes the change in position by moving it round one side of the character to the reverse side.
  • another would be, a conversation as they are walking through the door
This video clip explains it clearly to how this shot is taken correctly. From this video we learnt the basics of how to successfully fulfil the criteria for this shot. we will use this shot in our short film to capture a conversation between 2 people.
