Title sequence Analysis- Matthew Gollick

The title sequence which I will be analysing is the film se7en.

What is se7en about?

This film follows down several case of murder. The 2 two detectives are hunting for a serial killer to justify the crimes absolution for the worlds ignorance of the seven sins. The story follows the two detectives as they try to track down the killer based on the seven sins. When they trace the killer, they witness the this horrific crimes as they increase one by one. Until they get closer to the fate which neither of them predicted.

The titles start with an eye line match as the hand turns over the page on the book the light throughout is bare minimum which helps create a shadow effect, making it look abnormal. The titles are in a hand written in calligraphy font, this links to the writing in the book. The sequence uses several black screens where the titles overlay. In every shot as seen in the selection above the font is placed in the dark area this looks really good as the dark and white fit with each other so the whites standout well.

The second shot uses a plan view medium shot where we see 2 hands are printed face down on the book. This shot captures the shadows as they cross on the page. Following this shot are cut with fast paced rhythmic editing of the hand and the tools which the male is using. Between some of the shots we cut to a back screen  where the titles overlay the centre of the screen, this helps to break up the action and the titles. The cast names are presented on the black screens and match up well with the music and sound the diegetic sound here the names flicker when the razor vibrates. This effect links really well to visuals of the video.

After several shots we get a series of extreme close ups to show the objects in the hand of the male. Then they use some overlays where abnormal activity appears were random numbers appear over the title this is also a symbol of the film. When the film title appears non diegetic sound changes and the titles vibrate again. The credits shown throughout help define the genre as they use great editing techniques to capture the thriller/horror feel using a messy and flickering effect on the credits gives this appeal. The images shown look as if they doubled but they are being blurred, which helps to connotes to the audience that the activity is paranormal and mentally unstable.

The sound as a whole in this clip is made from non diegetic sounds but are all made to sound natural. sometimes in this title sequence there is a very high pitched noise which creates visuals in the audiences head of horror such as screaming. This also connotes danger. As a whole the back ground music is heavy toned and is quite fast. this creates suspence for the audience.

My thoughts and review
Analysing this title sequence has helped me understand the features involved with in the thriller genre for a title sequence. I found that a title sequence plays a big role around Mise-en-scene with the use of props as a symbol of the film. I really like this idea as it sets a tone and a feeling for the film to the audience. Researching into title sequences has given me ideas for a possible title sequence which my group could produce so I have decided to help me make that choice im going to send out both of my ideas to our audience so that they can tell me which they think is the best one.
